Ritchie Ledges in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The ledges were formed about 300 million years ago during the Pennsylvanian Period when much of northeast Ohio was underwater.
The stairs, shown here, were added in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corp. The Conservation Corp was formed in 1933 in an effort to battle the high unemployment rate for 17 - 21 year olds, which was about 38 percent. The men quarried rock from Peninsula to build the steps.
