Description
Walking down the path in Georgia I spotted a baby alligator in the water near the shore. The further I walked, the more alligators I saw. I wasn't there to see the alligators, my goal was to photograph the storks at the rookery at the end of the path. But I'm not one to pass up an opportunity, so since the alligators were there, I photographed them.
As I was photographing this one, a person exploring nearby kindly let me know that he would not dive into the water to save me if one of the adult alligators mistook me for food. I thought that was an odd thing for a stranger to say to me, after all he stood less than 5 feet from where I was standing so he was just as much at risk. I was using a telephoto lens, so I was a safe distance from my subjects. It was my first time to the area, and I knew little about alligators, but his words made me nervous. Well that and the shear number of alligators I had seen during my short hike.
It wasn't until later, as I was doing research for my book that I learned mother alligators will protect their young for the first two years and all that baby alligator had to do was cry out and she'd come to its rescue. You can learn about alligators and places to see them in my book "Explorer's Guide to Wildlife Adventures" (isbn: 9781975711351), it is available on Amazon.
